Christopher Mathie Biography

The Artist

Christopher L. Mathie was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1971. He was raised in the country near the desert where he gained interest and appreciation for the natural. He showed talent for art at an early age, always eager to create something.

In, 1990 Christopher moved to Tacoma, Washington to attend the University of Puget Sound. To attend he received the following scholarships; F. Carlton Ball Ceramics, Florence R. Todd, Image of Idaho, Beta Sigma Phi and a University of Puget Sound Art Department award. During college Christopher continued his observations of nature through the study of art. His studies led him to investigate drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and pottery. However, he discovered a quick and clear affinity for clay and the potter’s wheel. In, 1994 Christopher received his BA and graduated with honors in art, though by 1992 he was already exhibiting his works in Seattle, Gig Harbor and Tacoma, Washington. After graduation Christopher set up his studio on Tapps Island, in Sumner, WA. then later in downtown Gig Harbor, and on the Key Peninsula in Vaughn, WA. In 2001 Christopher found himself back in Gig Harbor — this time opening his own gallery space, the Christopher Mathie Gallery and Studio, located in the Finholm Marketplace.

Christopher’s work has been well received and he has already placed pieces nationally and internationally, including a piece in the private collection of Mr. and Mrs. Micki, former Prime Minister of Japan. Also, a collection on permanent display in the Port of Vladivostock was given as a corporate gift form the Port Of Tacoma in 1997 to commemorate the Russian port’s 100th anniversary. Christopher finds ultimate inspiration from the sea and nature, often incorporating images and textures from leaves, rocks, seashells, sticks and other treasures from his surroundings.

In both pottery and paintings, Christopher's northwest inspiration is immediately apparent and is often what draws collectors and peers to his studio.

Along with Christopher's interest in clay, he has recently begun exhibiting and selling his paintings. Christopher paints in oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. He uses a palette knife more than brushes to create marks quickly that are thick and rich in texture. The marks are made spontaneously, almost abruptly, often surprising himself with the outcome. Christopher wishes to imbue each image with a sense of freedom, spontaneity, and his personal excitement for life and the creative process.
